Deffo Paul's Leather tannery at Joppa works! I lived in the Rosebanks ('37 to '47) and the aroma was sick-making if the wind blew from the south! There was also Hess's Oil refinery nextdoor and Yorkshire Chemicals further down towards town.Nearly as bad as the 'Old Spice' and 'Hai Karate' thatwell-meaning aunties would give me for Christmas!

The smell of chlorine at Kirkstall Road baths; watching workmen laying tarmac roads; the toilets at our school!; Bazooka Joe bubblegum; smelling salts that my granny had in her handbag; lavender bags; christmas puddings being steamed for hours and hours.

Leeds City Station had an aroma of coal smoke when there were still a few steam engines around,I can also vaguely remember a slight hazeyness in the air.I suppose the smoke never really cleared. Also a rubbery smell on the old rear-entry Leeds buses.Upstairs would have been a fug of cigarette smoke.

The pong that issued from the destructors at the bottom of Armley Rd when they were burning something horrible!

Yes it's the smell of steam locomotives that's really evocative, smoke, hot oil, steam all combined. On the rare occasions I smell it these days, it brings back afternoons of waiting on the platforms at Leeds City for the Waverley or Thames-Clyde Express, there used to be two of each on an afternoon the up ones and down ones and they reversed at Leeds, with a new loco from Holbeck to take them out.
