They were darker, thicker and more brittle. I only recall having one once [from the Italian chap] and seem to think that they had a slightly different taste. I'd forgotten they were called twist cones. They're the ones they sold near the bus station. Like the cornet in a Cornetto, but fresher!

I remember as a kid in the 50's there used to be a wooden shack opposite the bus terminus on Lower Wortley rd,known as The Parlour. They sold the best scooped icecreams ever.Unfortunately they decided to Americanise and start selling banana splits and knickerboker glories. The dreaded Teddy Boys in their drapes, drainpipes and dayglo socks took over the joint. Not dangerous by todays standards but enough to stop families going there for a treat. I presume that business is well gone.--sadI dont know why 12000 kms away I'm boring the [edited for content] out of you over something I recall 50 years ago. I've become a total S L adict.Cheers Andy

Why is it you never seem to see any ice cream vans newer than the mk 3 Transit? Like attached (hopefully), when I was a lad they were always rusty old Bedfords and my local ice cream man played "match of the day" and "monty python's flying circus".

Has anyone mentioned 'Granellis'? I remember people asking for a 'sandwich',a small block of iced cream between two flat wafers also an 'oyster',two scallop shaped wafers stuffed with iced cream.

There was an ice cream firm on Bridge Street at one time called "Tonibell" I think they had turquoise vans - I don't think they lasted long. When you think about it apart from Walls all the other national ice cream brands seem to have disappeared - there was Neilsens (supposedly Canadian Ice Cream) Lyons Maid (I used to love Orange Maid at the pictures) and Eldorado all gone - some long gone.

Any Wortley-ites from the 60's/70's remember The Koola Bar ice cream van? It used to blast out the "Harry Lime Theme" and was a strange futuristic, sloping backed van.I can also remember one that only seemed to go to the Kirkdales of a Sunday evening by the name of "Fall's". We used to have a tupperware bowl and get it filled up by the ice cream man to go with some tinned fruit. Paradise!

Bet nobody remembers Old Tomasso who only had a handcart? He was quite old when he used to come struggling up RosebankView (pre-WW2!!). With his two wheeled cart plus a prop stand! He had to rest a couple of mins before shouting "Luvalee Ice-a-crema,Half-a penny cornet,Penny sam'widge, Tuppence a big a-da cuppa. Ras'berry vinegar on top. free!" We always took Dad'sex army pint pot out to be filled, always the same price! His ice cream was from a large steel drum which was placed in an even bigger ice container like a giant wine cooler. His ice cream was the most delicious I've ever tasted, (away fromItaly itself). I seem to recall Granelli's bought him out? They had ahorse and cart to do the hard work! (Health and Safety?Yer what!)I believe both Tomasso and Granelli sold those brown 'twist'cornets, which I'm sure were brandy snaps or Bourbon biscuit.Happy days! I think the Italian vendors weren't allowed to tradeWhen "Il Ducé "(Mussolini) entered the war,so we used to get the Wall'sey man round with his 'Stop Me and Buy One' trike! I think dear old Tomasso could get up Rosebank View hill quicker than him!I still maintain that the ice cream served with a wooden scoop from those tubs, was far superior to the sloppy rubbish 'soft' icecreamthat comes out of a tap on a Bedford CA Van! No Infuriating 'FootballTunes' A loud handbell was quite adequate!Arry
