Wetherspoon have also bought the old Christian Science building on Headingley Lane; most recently in use as part of Leeds Girls High School. This despite the fact that when they inquired about it in 2007 they were told by the council that any licence application would be refused. I suspect they are confident their lawyers will get it through on appeal.

Wetherspoons opened down here in the centre of Gloucester converting a large old cinema, the council had publicly said they would not grant permission for another licensed premises in that area. a year later it was up and running. strong rumours going round heree about "backhanders" being given.

One thing I must say about Wetherspoons is that they generally treat acquired notable buildings very sympathetically indeed and retain the former glories where possible. Cinemas and theatres in particular are saved from demolition or other inappropriate use. There are many examples that I can think of locally in Yorkshire and further afield - a few examples :-

Becketts Bank in Leeds
Listers Arms, Ilkley - admittedly built brand new as a night club, but on exactly the same site as the former West Yorkshire Bus depot, and beautifully and tastefully equipped.
Devonshire, Skipton,
Winter Gardens, Harrogate.
Palladium Theate, Llandudno.
?? Cinema, Surbiton, Surrey.
Three Tuns, Thirsk.
Unicorn, Ripon

So, it will be interesting to see what they make of the Christian Science building if permission is granted :? :?

I've always being led to believe, though I have never seen documentary proof, that the reason for a lack of pubs between the Original Oak and the Hyde Park was down to a covenant possibly to do with the Earl of Cardigan.

hi tyke boy
that area you talk about was known as the dry-mile and I was led to believe it had old covenant order on that area, but it could be just a old wives story.
