I only got a very brief look and from what I found out later they may well have been mink, as they were much too large for weasels/stoats and were definitely not rabbits! Actualy they might have been Pine Martens. Most people associate them with Scotland in accepted wisdom, but the Centre for Fortean Zoology to which i belong, has had sightings in North & west Yorkshire. They look like a large weasel.
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!

Thanks Steve . That's an interesting possibility. It was their very large size that particularly caught my attention. A few years back I was on the footbridge over the River Wharfe near Ox Close Wood (East Keswick area) when the river was in flood. I noticed an animal in the very fast flowing water and I initially thought it looked like it was being carried away, but it was clearly swimming across the flow and it got to the Woodhall side where I lost view. I was unsure what the animal was but I later found that descriptions of otters fitted well what I saw. I don't know if it was an otter but it was clearly at home in the water.

Both otters and mink can be found locally.Pine martens are still a threatened species in this country and you would be very lucky to see one but they are lovely creatures to look at ( not fun if you are a fish:-) )

Yes I saw a mink scampering along the concrete wharfeside of someones riverside garden as I was looking off of Newlay Bridge in spring of this year, it was jet black and shot up a pipe when it saw me looking at it.
