Saw quite a few late 60's early 70's.I was a Polytech and Kitson student but our union card gave us access to the superb acts that the Uni used to get.UniRolling StonesDeep PurpleMott the HoopleRod StewartLeonard CohenTom PaxtonPink FloydLed Zeppelin (maybe was generally hammered Sat nights, someone may confirm).FamilyPolyColosseum with Chris Farlowe making his debut with the band. Not a great fit at the time with Hiseman & co.MeccaThe Who! Missed the uni gig for some reason.Someone also mentioned the Royal Hall in HarrogateI saw The Nice there. Pretty good.At the Pink Floyd gig at the uni I was dating a teeny bopper girl from Preston, she didn't like Pink Floyd and dragged me out after the first 20 minutes. That relationship was doomed!

I saw Depeche Mode playing at Amnesia in their Vince Clark days c1980.The Amnesia was popular with the New Romantic movement of that era who were more interested in standing around, flicking their Phil Oakey stylee fringes and posing than buying drinks. This policy resulted in a short life span for said establishment which went on to become the Observatory. Those bloody toilets, what a trek.I also remember seeing Heaven 17 but the old memory can't remember whether it was at the Amnesia or the Warehouse.

Clandestine Root were unknown to me until I was at a charity dance at Rothwell Village Hall about 20 years ago and I recognised the chapn in front of me in the bar queue as Mick O'Brien who had been at school with me in the sixties and he was trying to relaunch this band. The live group at this dance were The Zodiacs who were very big in the Crossgates/Seacroft/whitkirk area in the sixties and had also reformed after a long period of inactivity and they kindly let Mick plug his upcoming show (at the Central I think)
All knowledge is important

I seen the Enid at the Poly too and also at the Bierkeller which I vaguely remember was in a basement at the Merrion Centre You might be interested if a fan that they are alive and kicking once more (excellent new album and some impressive live shows see www.theenid.co.uk )

Saw Cat Stevens at Leeds Uni, back in '68 (?) around the time of 'Lady Darbanville' - we all sat on the timber floor of a largish hall, Cat sat on the floor of the stage on cushions which wasn't much higher so he was a bit hard to see.All very laid back and relaxed... A great night from what I remember (which isn't much!)

Living out my teens in late 70's and early 80's Leeds; I recall reading the gig guides in Sounds with a great deal of envy of the other great northern cities such as Sheffield, Manchester and Newcastle where all the big bands routinely turned up at (read the back of every black tour t-shirts of the time ......... Sheffield City Hall, Hanley Victoria, Bradford St Georges, Manchester Apollo, Liverpool Empire, DeMontfront Hall Leicester & Newcastle City Hall were always listed). Rock fans in our great city relied on the whims of the "Ents Secretary" at the Poly or Uni and the occasional tour promotor brave enough to try to set their band up in the hovel that was the Queens Hall!My musical youth flitted therefore between the University, Queens Hall, the Fforde Greene and the occasional surprise venue. The Poly at that time, apart from a gig by the Enid was off limits as its booking policy seemed focussed on the new wave which I still had not caught up with!Of the bands I can recall , I am sure that I managed to catch at the Queens Hall:Black Sabbath (twice in the Ronnie Dio days)SaxonLindisfarne (sponsored by Radio Aire and re-broadcast)Rainbow (night after the riots in Chapeltown & Harehills)MotorheadWhitesnake (twice; the second I am sure broke the attendance record)At the Uni:Rory Gallagher (twice; the first show being probably one of the best gigs I have ever seen)HawkwindLindisfarneMotorheadAt the Fforde Greene:Def LeppardTygers of Pang TangIQThe Ian Gillan BandBo DiddleyLimelight (the local three piece progressive rock hopefuls)Praying MantisVardisElsewhere in the city:As mentioned above, The Enid at the BierkellerRossington Collins Band (guitarists Allen Collins and Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd) at a club in the Merrion CentreKen Hensley Band (ex Uriah Heep, probably at the same venue in the Merrion Centre ........... why I went is another question)Oh aye and just to prove that my music taste matured as I grew up a bit I recall going to see the absolutely seminal Irish folk-rock band Moving Hearts at the Irish Centre, the glorious Scottish folk rock of Silly Wizard at the old Playhouse and the brilliant Neil Innes at the City Varities. Then of course there was the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen in Roundhay ParkOne of the very last music venue I attended as a resident of Leeds was the grounds of Temple Newsam House ........ the 1982 Leeds Folk Festival. A brilliant weekend (we camped) of fantastic music (Country Joe MacDonald, Moving Hearts, John Martyn, Maddy Prior and the absolutely sublime Maxi & Mitch) fuelled by limitless supplies of Guinness and DuvelWhile thinking about this ........ I wonder how many folks remember the Bailey Bros discos (either supporting bands or as a night at the likes of the Fforde Greene)?
