Well preciseley. It is "general chat" and therefore any posts should be viewed as such, and not in the general overall spirit of the site, hence general chat.I believe that opinions should be heard, and unless these opinions were of an offensive/vindictive nature ie say someone with a BNP axe to grind then they should be allowed to stay.Jonesy was getting some personal stick recently, and quite rightly this was dealt with. The posts on here were promoting debate in a fairly reasoned manner and i could see no posts that deserved removal. One may appear to have been a little heated, but as usual the cyberworld removes that important factor of human communication, that is body language and actual tone of delivery and im more than sure that it was meant only as a natural reaction to an opinion which did not fit with the respondent. No name calling,no abuse, just healthy debate.

This is the way it should be folks. Sensible intelligent debate. We did abide by Brandy's lines as all opinions were in and registered. At no point did it become out of hand in any way. I just think that the person who removed the posts gave the members little credit and didn't read the tone very well.Anyway, what was done was done and the members on here have once again showed themselves prefectly capable of self regulation. What i think really happened is that everyone is scared stiff of any form of racial debate (which this was not i might add) but I suppose there was potential for the subject to be touched on.If we as intelligent people don't discuss it the likes of the BNP get 10% of the vote. Whoops.

Whoops. I whole heartedley agree Reg,i really do.I am one of the admins and i think there needs to be some structure to the admin of this site. There are very few sites that are as mature and self regulating as this one,its almost the "Last of the summer Wine" when it comes to discussions on here. However there was often the odd fall out between Compo and Foggy, but nothing too much (where am i coming from???)Personally i think the general chat thread is exactly that. Its a slight diversion from the specific themes of the threads on Secret Leeds, and as such it will be prone to "going off course".I cant see any problem with that,as long as it doesnt get OTT and people are attacked on a personal level.Though this has occured in the past it has been dealt with accordingly.Brandys lines have worked in the past and continue to do so.When we all see them we know its time to stop, and in this case it did.

What a coincidence this date is for me. If in Leeds I would certainly be going to the parade, but on that very day I am going with a friend of mine to Arras in France - he wants to visit the graves of two of his ancestors who were killed in WW1 and are buried near there. Well, one is buried and the other is mentioned on memorial panels as he was never found. The two cemeteries are at Vis-en-Artois and at Colincamps.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Woah,Colincamps.my grandmothers brother is buried there,on about going over next year.He was killed on the first day of the Somme, part of 2 Btn Duke of Wellingtons.Im still reasearching what happened but i think he was killed in no mands land when his company obeyed the order to halt after they had gone over the top,the other 3 companies didnt, they went on to the German trenches because the enfilade fire was so intense. The poor sod was also one of the 70 survivors of the gas attack the previous year on Hill 60 in May 1915.350 of the Battalion were casualties that night.Hed been in France 2 weeks.I think Si said his grandfather was in the 2nd Battn as wellLet me know how you go on please as any info on getting there and what you found would me most welcome.Im on my Jollies until 1/07 so if you do post anything dont think im ignoring you

If you like to let me have your ancestor's name (by e Mail if private - [email protected]) I will see if that helps. We are staying in Arras Sturday and Sunday - country bus services in France are seemingly very poor and/or non existent. We can get to Vis-en-Artois by bus on Saturday, but to Colincamps (27 miles from Arras) on Sunday no chance, So its two taxis costing Goodness knows what, or we are thinking of hiring a car instead. My last driving in Europe was on coach tours in the 1980s and so I am not so keen but it looks like needs must.Any more clues do let me know.
