Until the end of WW1, the best room in a pub was known as the Smoke Room, and the less plush area (with correspondingly lower prices) was usually known as (the) Vaults.During the 1920s & 30s, the vogue for the USA style 'roadhouse' pub in the UK led to the smart room being generally renamed The Lounge, with the Vaults becoming known as the Tap Room or Public Bar.

They also called the lounge,in this area, the "best" room! But I often wondered about the origin of the "vaults"Thanks for the information Bruno.

I always understood that “Vaults” was an attempt at superiority over those premises that didn’t have “Vaults” ie. in the days before artificial cooling systems, the beer was stored in the cellar [Vault] where it was somewhat cooler and, by implication, better than the in those premises where the barrels was racked up behind the bar and the beer was at room temperature.

Front of LGI, Gt George Street entrance, used on Munroe as the hospital he works in but the interior was definitely somewhere else. Anyone know where?

Nice to know, I seem to remember the Haddon Hall had Vaults etched on one of the windows. Also a small room had snug on a window and the door, between the tap room and the lounge

I read a while back that there's an unused area of LGI used for filming inside hospital scenes on Emmerdale which the production team pay a fee for using. The other week on Emmerdale the outside of Clarendon Wing was used for filming a hospital scene.

On the subject of pubs, does anyone know what a 'West Riding corridor' is? I can remember being told that The Grove in Holbeck, and The Packhorse on Woodhouse lane have them. Its something to do with the layout of the pub, I dont know if its peculiar to the West Riding or what. Any ideas?

Isn't it where you have an entrance into a corridor and the bar and rooms off either side?
