My thanks to the lady in the shop who gave me a DVD the next day without question and with fulsome apologies. This means I now have a VHS copy of this wonderful two hour film record of past Leeds going spare. So, free to the first reader who would like it and arranges to collect it from me. Lets say at the old entrance to Armley Library at the corner of Town Street and Wesley Road. Offered under the one condition that it is not sold on, but re-advertised here under similar conditions if no longer required. Bought the same DVD - some fascinating material on it - e.g. Film of city square around 1900 showing several varieties of trams including steam. I think the backdrops are as interesting as the trams. I'm trying to identify a car following a tram over Dragon Bridge - looks similar to a Leeds Job Day car. You are so right Jim, a cracking couple of hours. I watch it for the trams first then again to see whats going on in the background. Will have another peep tonight Leeds Hippo to see if You are right about Leeds Job Day car.Friday night, Beer and Trams HMMMM!!

Anyone seen really rather good The Kings Speech?Elland Road stands in as Wembley Stadium thanks to a bit of computer trickery. It's the John Charles Stand (formerly the West Stand) they use which you should be able to spot if you watch carefully (you can spot the glazed area at the Elland Road end of the stand in a couple of shots) - presumably they wanted to use an ancient structure filled with folk from before the war...

From t'YEP:The streets of Leeds are being used as a backdrop for a new film which will travel the world. Neil Hudson met the director who is both subject and star. TUCKED away in a family-run baker’s shop off a traffic-choked Harehills Lane, amid the tightly-packed, red-brick back-to-back houses which epitomise that part of the city, a man named Karl Nolan is watching his childhood play out before his very eyes. The word ‘Action!’ sounds and three child actors file into the bakery, which has remained virtually unchanged since it first opened 60 years ago. Full story here - sounds intriguing: http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... _1_3307467

Another opportunity to see Leeds on screen tonight (Sunday), ITV1 at 7pm:(from the YEP website)A drama set in 1940s Leeds, told through the eyes of a teenage boy, is to be shown on Sunday on ITV.Most of the filming for the one-off two hour show, was made on location, almost entirely in Leeds.Starring teenager Josh Bolt as Henry, the prestigious cast also includes Sheila Hancock as his gran, and Elaine Cassidy as his mum.Scenes were filmed in locations across Leeds during August as the story is based in the north of England. A couple of scenes were shot in Scarborough and Stockport. It set in 1949, and 15-year-old Henry lives with his mother, Maureen stepfather, uncle Bill, played by Dean Andrews, and his paternal gran, played by Hancock. Henry’s in his last year of school and on the brink of becoming an adult. His grandmother discouraged him from taking an interest in school because his father thought it was a waste of time and as a loyal son, he towed the line, despite the best efforts of uncle Bill and Maureen.Adapted by Michael Chaplin, who is creator of Monarch of the Glen, from Michelle Magorian’s critically acclaimed novel, Just Henry tells the story of one boy’s discovery that will alter his family life forever.Set in post-Second World War Britain, Henry is growing up in a fraught and unsettled household. A troubled young man, Henry suffers from bad nightmares which everyone attributes to the aftermath of living through a war, and the fact that he’s never really overcome his father’s death, or his mother’s subsequent remarriage.Sheila Hancock said of her character: “She’s a proud mother and doesn’t want to lose the memory of her son. In those days the different generations of the same family would live together. Gran is very disruptive and outspoken character.”When his father’s war medal for bravery gets posted through the door Henry wants to know more about the circumstances of his father’s death, something that his mother has always preferred him not to know about. At school, Henry leads an insular life, until a new teacher engages his passion for film, he slowly starts to see the world differently. Henry’s research into his father leads him on an interesting journey with a shocking conclusion.Just Henry screens on ITV 1 on Sunday (December 1 at 7pm.Looks quite promising in the advert, so fingers crossed...
