If its meant to be in Leeds have a bus with Leeds livery on so everyone could assosciate it with Leeds. The destination board would only be familiar to people in and around Leeds and a West Riding bus would only be known to some residents of western yorkshire as running in to Leeds. Si wrote: Dunno, Trojan, but Davey's speculation (see above) may hold water. Also, the film company was most likely from down south, so the props buyer/art director may have sourced a bus from the nearest big city (Leeds.)Going by Cardiarms' Google Street View, the street in the film does look more like Wakefield Westgate than the Headrow. Surely someone must know if there is/was a Bull Hotel there? I doubt if the fleeting glimpse of the pub warranted some set-dressing.      Unfortunately Trojan appears to be the best bet on regular posters familiar with Wakefield of more than 10 years ago and it doesn't seem to be ringing any bells for him. At the time the film was made Wakefield were the dominant team in British RL. It was widely known that the film was being made in Wakefield and that Wakefield's players were taking part as extras (the first scene in the film is Derek Turner, the then Wakefield captain stiff arming Richard Harris) So I'd have thought a West Riding bus would have added authenticity. But as you say a props buyer from down south possibly wouldn't get that. It's difficult to say, I must admit there's some doubt in my mind now, but Westgate in Wakefield is a sloping street and the scene appears to take place on a level street. Having said that the Wakefield Mecca was just around the corner from Westgate and both scenes could have been filmed on the same day, I believe that's normally how films are put together. Wakefield has changed since the film was shot. The site at the top of Westgate where Argos is now was the Grand Electric Roller Rink. I suppose we'll have to believe Imdb. Perhaps Blakey can throw some light on the LCT 66 route.

Thanks Si, my saviour once again - and my forehead is only bleeding a little bit ( from banging it on the table! ).I must now accept that this is indeed Wakefield Westgate and the view down the hill is looking west - the railway bridge in the background and the unmistakable clock tower, now alas gone, of the GNR Westgate railway station confirm it.The bus is LCT No910 - which I am sure Blakey can tell us all about. The LCT 66 route was as I described in an earlier posting on the page previous to this one.

The slope on Westgate does flatten out before the kink to the left towards the bull ring and isn’t all that obvious near the top http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&cli ... 21522&z=16 The slope is more pronounced below the Theatre and there is the railway bridge http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&cli ... 21522&z=16 Admittedly there is a down hill to a similar railway bridge in Briggate (Leeds)

Have a friend who played for Wakefield Trinity at this time and was an extra in the film who told me the rugby scenes were shot at a union ground in the London area, not at Belle Vue, although he couldn't remember which one.

The scene with the bus is definately Wakefield Westgate. The pub "The Bull" was a bar/restaurant late 70s early 80s before reopening as the bar and nightclub "Rumours".Believe it is still a club but don't know it's name. The rugby scenes were filmed at Belle Vue, 1,000,000 extras who were there will verify that. External shots of the committee, Arthur Lowe et al, were actually filmed at Thrum Hall Halifax. The entrance to the Mecca Locarno was situated where the entrance to the Ridings between Greggs and the side door of BHS is now.

How many extras? That's a hell of a crowd and no mistake!

The Bull was a Greek bar /restaurant, then Rumours and is now Reflex as seen in the picture. There were two entrances, one on Westgate with the other being round the corner on Market street. Some of the 1,000,000 extras that watched TSL been filmed at Belle Vue are not visible as some who claimed to be there would still have been swimming around in their dad's hairy recepticles.

So I finally got a copy of the Leeds Trams DVD from the Leeds Civic Trust shop - except when I got it home it was an empty case with no DVD! My thanks to the lady in the shop who gave me a DVD the next day without question and with fulsome apologies. This means I now have a VHS copy of this wonderful two hour film record of past Leeds going spare. So, free to the first reader who would like it and arranges to collect it from me on here or on my e-mail address in my user profile. Offered under the one condition that it is not sold on, but re-advertised here under similar conditions if no longer required.

Offered under the one condition that it is not sold on, but re-advertised here under similar conditions if no longer required.     Bought the same DVD - some fascinating material on it - e.g. Film of city square around 1900 showing several varieties of trams including steam. I think the backdrops are as interesting as the trams. I'm trying to identify a car following a tram over Dragon Bridge - looks similar to a Leeds Job Day car.
