I think Loiner was referring to the concept of Yorkshire Day being Tetley's not the phrase.@Loiner Its almost 40 years since Middlesborough has been "politically" part of Yorkshire. Therefore a lot of the youngsters will have forgotten that while the Smoggies may be in an administrative district called Cleveland, they still regard themselves, as we do, as being part of the County of Yorkshire Very emotive subject, them there boundaries.....!Ask the people of Todmorden(West Yorks, but with Oldham post code and STD dialling code-most even talk like lancastrians) and Barnoldswick(now E.Lancs but was part of old West Riding 'til 1974 boundary changes)...at least most of them talk proper Yorkshire and many still call themselves Yorkshiremen/women.....suppose they would if born pre-1974 ! But if you go up there you'll see historic Yorkshire and Lancashire signs. The Lancastrians are just as keen on keeping their historical county as we are. Come to think of it the badge of Saddleworth - part of Oldham since 1974 is a white rose, and I believe Delph still play cricket in the Huddersfield League. Although it must be admitted that Todmorden play in the Lancashire League. I believe that at one time the county boundary ran through Tod Town Hall.

It's correct to say that Todmorden CC play in the Lancs League. Some senior representative County 2nd XI matches are played at their lovely ground there. However, they always seem to be between Yorks and Lancs. Who's the home team? Why, we are of course - aren't we?.JD

Saddleworth only became Lancastrian in 1972, when they changed the borders. The August 1st Yorkshire Day was incorporated into the Army celebration of the Battle of Minden which took place during the 7 year war on August 1759. The soldiers included the Yorkshire Light Infantry and others who have celebrated this day for hundreds of years.I dont mind really why we started the celebration but am happy to join in without any money being paid out. I grow my own white roses and have a glass of wine already bought in so no money. We are proud of our heritage and thats good enough for me.

For much of the 20th century it was in the county borough of Teesside, which spanned both sides of the river. The locals think of themselves as Teessiders rather than Yorkshiremen and mentally Guisborough (or maybe Yarm) is where Yorkshire starts. It's one of the places where history and tradition don't quite match.
