I think Sunlight collect washing from Harrogate hotels the name rings a bell, although if you see the news tonight I don't think they'll be collecting from the Hotel Majestic for a while. Folk are going round saying it's the biggest fire they've seen in Harrogate, yours truly being a Leeds lass remembers the Leeds market fire and the regular fires that smelt liked they were coming from the tyre dumps, think they were out Cross Green way, the smoke used to billow over the Killingbeck cemetery towards Seacroft, that thick acrid stuff that burnt your eyes.Jools

I used to go to Armley Park school and remember the smell of the laundry, if the wind was blowing the right way. We also used to walk past the laundry to go for our school dinners which were in the old chapel on Lodge Road. I also remember some of the workers outside sweating when it was a hot day.I also used to go near the Moorfield Laundry as my school friend used to live in the next street.Just a bit of knowledge for you, that Alan Bennett the playright also lived near Moorfield Road and his Dad used to work as the Manager of the Co-op somewhere near Lodge Road.

My mum used to work in the Coop dairies on Springwell Road, not the Coop itself unfortunately so I don't think she ever met Alan Bennett's dad, best job she ever had, with her rubber apron and wellies on, up to her arms in cold water bottling milk, heaven knows it must have been freezing but she loved the job trouble is she got too good at bottling and they took her off the bottling line and moved her to the office, think she only stayed a few days before moving on, mind you jobs were plentiful in those days think she worked in half of Leeds factories over the years Taintons, Schweppes, Pettys, Marshalls, Majestic Cinema, Mansion at Roundhay Park, Hagenbachs on Church Lane, Soapy Joes, Atkinsons and Bettys cafe in Leeds market, Schofields, tower Fisheries to name but a few!Jools
