Thanks again for all the helpful advice you've provided. After much deliberation, review website reading and going to shops to press buttons, I've finally decided that I'm going to take the plunge with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38, rather than a full blown DSLR.It's got all the functions I'll need (for now) and the added bonus of being put in "auto" mode when needed, along with a HD camcorder function, plus it's got consistently good reviews across the board.http://www.trustedreviews.com/digital-c ... FZ38/p1All being well I'll be ordering it on payday, then praying for decent weather to get out and use it.My current stuff is here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/8964340@N05/ (you'll need to cut and paste this as it doesn't format properly on here for some reason).Hopefully there will be improved stuff to add soon. Davey - if you go into your flickr profile, there's a bit to change your screen name (not obvious to find), and gets rid of that @ in the addy.

Well, I finally bought the FZ38 yesterday, but what a palaver! It's now virtually impossible to find anyone who actually have it in stock - the company I was going to buy it from have been expecting deliveries for 2 week and still haven't got any, despite being promised them last week, the Panasonic Centre in Leeds are quoting 4 weeks till they get them in. Currys have them but are charging silly money (recession, what recession?).I thought I'd tracked one down in St Helens(!) but when I called them they were out of stock (despite their website saying otherwise).Eventually I found one at Jacobs on Albion Street - the last one they had in stock and quite possibly the last one in the country!I'm very pleased with it - so pleased in fact that as soon as the MotoGP was over this morning it was off to Swinsty Reservoir in the Washburn Valley to start shooting.Except the weather was rubbish when we got there (thankyou John Mitchell). Gloomy and overcast, blowing a gale and raining. I managed to take a dozen or so shots using "intelligent auto" mode but the camera spent most of our visit in the camera bag Still, at least the dog got a walk.....and the pics I took look quite promising, considering.I'm currently uploading a couple of the pics to flickr, but for some reason only the "basic" uploader appears to be working tonight so it's taking an age.
