An enduring image in my mind's eye - being about 6 or maybe 7, standing on the platform of what I think must have been Central Station, ready to depart on the summer Hol to somewhere by the sea, Mum charging in a seemingly endless pursuit of four seats together before boarding the train, even, I thought, contemplating the space on the footplate as more than once we would arrive at the engine, the awe-inspiring size of those giant metal wheels - bigger than me - and the wheezing of seeping steam from here there and everywhere but, not once did this spectacle give rise to fear, just - wonderment

Well all that atmosphere and enjoyement of the dirty old railways has long since gone now.It may be cleaner, greener, quieter and faster. It certainly is a lot sh*t*r lol Plastic buses on train tracks indeed!
