When we went to buy (drakes) a decent bike for my son some years ago now, names like Brookes, Stronglite, Campag Fiamme seemed to have been long since buried. More to the point, most of my old surviving 'workshop' tools were of no use at all with today's offerings. Had some marvellous brakes with carvon fibre pads, nearly put myself over the top when I tried them. Bet I could still build a wheel though!

I don’t know exactly when they started selling frames but in the 1950’s they had a shop at Hyde Park Road near (No. 4) John Clay (Leeds Coureurs R.C.) who is the father of Jonathan Clay the Olympic track cyclist and (No. 5) myself (Yorkshire Century R.C.). I have no knowledge of Woodrup’s making frames for J.T. Rodgers. Thanks for that Ian, that's very in depth! As for the Clays, I'm not sure if they still have that shop in the mills at Rodley? Not sure I know anyone in your Club.My racing is mainly confined to cyclo-cross 'for' Featherstone Road Club, with previous forays into road-racing & MTB racinghttp://www.featherstoneroadclub.co.uk/news.php Back in the 80's I worked with a guy, Gerry Clark, who rode with the Featherstone Road Club. Being a lazy fat sod I always found it mad [though enviable] that he cycled from Pontefract to Leeds and back everyday and didn’t count it as part of his training. It took me all my time to drag my sorry a**e two hundred yards up the road on foot to get to work.

I had a Bob Jackson in the 80's, it was a beautiful bike with ornate lugs and nice Campagnolo fittings. Got robbed from my parents garage. Got a Falcon to replace, it not in same league.Anyoen remember Combat Sports on Boar Lane in the 80's? Sold all sorts of ninja rubbish to spotty, violence obsessed teenagers. I bet teachers loved it.
Ravioli, ravioli followed by ravioli. I happen to like ravioli.

I stopped cycling in 1965 because of my job, as I had to work earlies, lates, nights and only had one weekend off in four. I only get one off in 3, to be fair to my NHS collegues iansmithofotley wrote: I still love to follow the big races on Sky Eurosport TV and I am looking forward to watching Lance in the Giro at the weekend and later in the Tour in July So am I, anything to upset the French (ie; Lances return)I rode with Motorola once, when they did a Leeds Classic (Armstrong was World Champion at time), & they wanted a way out of the city-centre for a training ride (on the Saturday before race) iansmithofotley wrote: Some of the chain gang came from your area such as Barry Hoban, Albert Hitchen and Bernard Burns. Even Beryl Burton turned up occasionally I knew Barrys dad (Joe) before he died, & know his sister (Josie) & brother-in-law (Mike) quite well, used to go to their house a lot. 'Maverick Cyles' (Dave Laverick, near 'Dawsons Corner', Pudsey) - Remember this one, it was opposite the fire station and Pudsey police station, Dave was a good rider, fit as a fiddle as used to go cycling with him in the late 80's, he had a wife who rode called Diane and a friend of mine saw him a few weeks ago and he's well.

I saw Dave at a Cyclo-Cross not too long ago, as I was in the same race as himHe is looking good for his age! (think I bet him though, or was within a couple of places of him)I can't remember which event it was offhand?

[quotenick="RichT"]I know some of the bike shops, but not many normal sports shops (bar Radcliffes)'Watson & Cairns' (eulogised elsewhere)'Bob Jacksons' (formely of Harehills Lane, now in Bramley)'Woodrups' (Kirkstall Road)=I recall the old (the real) Bob Jackson then at Harehills La (now Drakes) exported all over the place. Built one for President Gerald Ford of tha US of A (or is that a Leeds urban myth).Someone bought the Bob Jackson name, no longer a retail bike shop they are specialist frame makers still up at Bramley. Nice kit.
