I bet every town above 50k population has a KFC and Leeds at 750k has only ever had one in outlying suburbs. It's probably a licensing or franchise issue. To be honest, I haven't ever noticed as I don't eat meat, and especially not KFC, but it's a good point. Are there even any imitators, thinking about it... the Dixy on Briggate seems to be the only one.

They'd better make it a big one. I think that's part of the problem actually - there probably isn't the floor space available in the city centre for one. I remember having a conversation in the pub a while back about a major problem with city living in Leeds - that there wasn't a decent supermarket in the city centre. The Safeway on Albion Street closed when Morrison's bought the company (Mozzers don't seem to be into metro stores at the moment). There's the Co-op under the old sorting office, and now there's a Tesco Metro at the Bridgewater, but none where in other cities you would expect to see one - Manchester has three Sainsbury's in the city centre for example, and I wouldn't doubt that they and/or Tesco would kill for a metro store on the Headrow or Briggate. Someone around here will know who owns what or how the zoning works in the city centre...

Also the old Safeway is a Tesco Metro now and Sainburys is opening soon in the old Lewis' building, M&S has two one in the basement of the big store and one in City Station. Oh and Harvey Nicks has a small foodhall upstairs if you are flush. There is another Coop on Wellington Street as well, spoiled for choice mate.
Ravioli, ravioli followed by ravioli. I happen to like ravioli.

I thought that Safeway had become a Tescos - think I noticed it on Friday night as I bimbled past from the Leeds Brewery Taps (not a bad place, beer is good, decor and staff a little less so - and as for a DJ on a Friday night in what is basically a real ale bar :S ).What I actually meant was that there weren't any supermarkets that opened out of regular shopping hours, and I'm going back 18 months or two years, and it's only since then that the Co-op and the Tescos have a opened and that you can buy a tin of beans after 6pm. The city centre is only catching up now, which might even help the depressed market. You're right though, it still doesn't explain the absence of KFC.

There has been a late convenience store on the Headrwo for a few years now but you are right, not many and a girl at work who lives in some falts near the Etap has only just got a shop in her builting and used some little place in Brwerey Wharf before. There were a few but were hidden away. There was always the station I gues, the Whistlestop if money was no option.

There is what I like to think of as "the secret supermarket" hidden away down the street at the side of the Adelphi pub. it caters for people living in the refurbished buildings around there. I was amazed to come across it the other year when taking a shortcut down there.
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!
