ARRY AWK WROTE :-"By the way,do you remember the Parade Marshall congratulatingus Veterans on our marching and bearing, after we haddismissed? That was behind the Oxford Place chapelI think.PS. Wouldn't it be great if we could have the Marines band??"...................................................................................................Yes, that Parade Marshall is a splendid chap who does wonders every year.Year before last we had the Leeds City Police Band - they were first class, and played some really appropriate music including, if I remember rightly, "The Great Little Army" as we left the Cenotaph - one of my favourite marches along with "Old Comrades."This particular Parade always "gets to me" as my Dad was born half a mile away in what was Carlton Hill in 1889 - I can't help realising that he will have walked these streets many a hundred times in his youth, including the occasion no doubt when he volunteered to join up for the horrors of Egypt and The Somme with the Leeds Pals (15th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment)
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
