Hi Geordie-exile,I used to go to Jacomelli's in Boar Lane during the 1960's. At the time, it was regarded as an 'upmarket' type of restaurant. I didn't go in the restaurant, but downstairs. In the basement, there was a bar called the Aloha Bar (complete with parrot). It was quite a trendy place to go. In those days, all things Hawaiian, must've been a fashion as the Old Mecca had a cafe in that style and the New Mecca had a nightclub next to it called the Bali Hai.Ian

The following extract is taken from "A History of Cafes and Restaurants in Leeds" by Donald Tate, published in 1988. Some of this duplicates the information on the Leodis photo, which I suspect was taken from the same source."Originally opened in 1906 as Jacomelli's Swiss Restaurant and Cafe, by Anthony and Francis Jacomelli, son of Anthony Jacomelli, an Italian-Swiss who opened eating houses in London and Bristol. Anthony junior died in 1942 but the business was carried on until 1944 by his wife, when it went out of the family. In 1949 Jacomelli's was sold to Hagenbachs and was sold again in 1967, this time to the Berni Chain and it became the 100th Berni Inn, the first one being the "Horst" restaurant in Bristol, which was opened some 24 years earlier. Berni's completely refurbished Jacomelli's, having it reopened the following year by the Lord Mayor Alderman J. Rafferty."I can't find anything else about the Jacomelli family in Leeds, but I found this obituary for a member of the family, which mentions the London and Bristol restaurants but not the Leeds one:http://www.swissreview.co.uk/news.php?i ... all&max=70

What on earth is a 'Tingalary' ? I've only just worked out what a 'Hurdy-Gurdy' is in the past few weeks, now here is something else I've never heard of, are the two things related? Is it anything to do with Tingley? What is the ice-cream connection? Was it like an early version of an icecream vans chimes machine? Whats going on?!!!
