This hopefully means I need never go to the Tesco Extra ever again.

At the rate it has started the building will be up quite soon. I thought it might be of interest to show the photo I took on September 12 2011 when there was still some preparatory work going on prior to the building of the Tesco Express at that location. The photo can be compared to a photo I took on October 28 2011 that is in my next post.

This is the photo I took at the site on October 28 2011. It shows that the building is going up fast. The scene changes virtually every day, as there was work going on even on Saturday October 29 with work on the brick wall seen in the rear.

I remember recently from a TV news item that Tesco had been hauled over the coals once more for breaking the rules which seemingly require a national pricing regime, which outlaws differential pricing over different parts of their coverage. I would have thought that this would also apply to their smaller stores; the downside is that even lower prices would be more competition against the independants.

No, they definitely charge higher prices at smaller stores. We reluctantly use the Tesco Express on St Pauls Street regularly (it's virtually the only place on our route to work where you can park outside and get a paper early on a morning since our local newsagent inexplicably started not opening until 6.30am) and pretty much everything is more expensive there than the Tesco Extra near our home or the adverts (read the small print!). They also don't have many of the BOGOF or 3 for 2 offers on stuff either.Morrisons do the same with their local stores, as do SainsburysAsda are the only major national supermarket to charge the same price at all their stores - they made a big point of this when they started rebranding the former Netto stores recently.

I'll be living next door quite literally to the Tesco at Kirkstall and have to say I don't want it, the usual traffic and planning problems aside there is a huge big Morrisons right on my doorstep, with an Asda just opened a short distance down the road.
