Now I'm confused again! What I meant by 'next door' is that I thought the cop shop was adjoining the baths further along on Cross Union Street - that is obviously wrong as proved by the maps. And now I'm questioning my memory of the front of the cop shop - I really thought the entrance also faced Vicar Lane, same as the baths. So my contribution here is pretty worthless.

However, the baths and the cop-shop were next door to each other, in that the buildings were next to each other, but their fronts faced in opposite directions - the baths west, and the cop-shop east. When you say next door to each other do you mean next door on Union Street? Yeah, Lee. They were next door to each other on Union Street (to the north) and Back George Street (to the south.) Millgarth Place was originally between them, but this got swallowed up when the new cells were built between 1908 and Tasa's 1920s map. Going by the photos, the front of the police station faced Millgarth Street (and the new police station) and going by the floor plan on the map (and Geordie-exile's memory) the baths faced the opposite way onto Cross Union Street.Clear?

Here's an (unfortunately undated) aerial shot of the Millgarth area, from Leodis. It's a shame it's so black, but you can make out that most of the buildings in the area are still standing, including the north side of Union Street/south side of Eastgate.
