Our ice cream van in Pudsey in the 60s was Mr Softee. He played Popeye The Sailor Man. When we moved to near Dawson's Corner, the van was a Rossi's (Bradford, I think) and he played Beautiful Dreamer. Early 70s, he did a plastic cone full of ice cream with a round chewing gum in the bottom called a Screwball.

I live in North Leeds and remember loads of different ice creams vans. The most vivid one has to be of a big hard tatooed guy who'd had a heart attack and couldnt stop work for very long. quite a generous guy. Also remember another Italian guy who used to serve hot dogs by getting half a frenck stick, boring the middle out and then sliding a sausage down it!He used to play greensleeves, but also occasionaly used to play "The Entertainer" (the tune from the Felix cat food adverts!)

Quote: a plastic cone full of ice cream with a round chewing gum in the bottom called a Screwball. They still do them - some also still do 'specials' - an ice cream cone with a lolly stuck in.

I'm from Rothwell and Longo's was the main whippy monger. I recall being ever so dissappointed if the Wall's guy came down the street as he only had those nasty yellow brisks which were awful.Longo pretended to be an Italian but he was from Hunslet and worked at the Copper Works. Two ball screwballs were the ultimate or sherbert overed ice cream.I always lopved Lumbs Dairy ont he way to Nermillerdam in Wakefield for a Sunday stroll. Is it just me but as a kid didn't Ice Cream Man seem like a proper job (especially Walls as they had a yellow overall) as opposed ot the opportunistic tax avoiders we have now.
Ravioli, ravioli followed by ravioli. I happen to like ravioli.

Lol - my son, who is 8, is obsessed with icecream vans (or was last 'summer' and I expect it will be the same this season. His ambition is to be an Icecream man!

My favourite was an ice cream oyster, but I only got one as a special treat. I remember an ice cream place by the bus station in the 60s where the cones were a kind of hard brown biscuit (like a Cornetto) as opposed to the usual type. They were delicious!
