Sorry Laura but it is Walter that came to Leeds but probably just after 1901 as I have managed to find reference and the "facsimile" of his 1906 marriage certificate on yorkshirebmd. We believe Walter was a batman in the Hussars and served in some or all of the 2nd Boer war 1899 - 1902 so probably was missed from the 1901 censusAs far as I know William never left the Huntingdonshire/Peterborough area and I think the same applies to his other 8 (?) children (Walter's siblings) or his wife (walter's mum) but would like to establish what links this family to the Mackleys

Although I have thanked her privately I would just like to thank Laura publically for all the hard work (and there must have been lots) she has put in trying to solve my mystery unfortunately to no avail. The mystery still stands due to circumstances beyond both Laura's and my control.

Hi Hats off, sorry i cannot find it looks like they have disapperaed of the face of the earth....i started to look and found them in the 1901 census, but couldn't find them in the 1891 census...Do you want the 1901 census details? One thing i did find was a marraige of William Hart and a Elizabeth Leonard in 1882 in Leeds... it was the only record for a marriage in Leeds before 1888 ( when their oldest so was born) and the only William to marry an Elizabeth... so it must be a match to back this up i looked on the 1881 and did find aRobert Leonard B:1833, in Ashton under Lyne, LancashireCaroline Leonard B: 1835, Elizabeth Leonard B: 1866Amelia Leonard B: 1872, i couldn't find them in any other census again i think the records are missing... not sure but i cannot find them if they are their are a few thinsg i can try so i havn't given up hope yet... tell me if the above Leonard record rings any bells...

Thanks Loz, I have the 1901 census details already but as you can see they were a difficult lot to find on earlier ones. It's strange because I can not find William on the 1881 either. I know he was born in 1863 in Leeds but he is not on any BMD that I have seen (There is a William H Hart born 1863 but unfortunatley it's not my ancestor). I have his marriage cert and he did indeed marry Elizabeth Leonard (She is also a bit of a mystery) in 1882. He has cloth presser as his occupation on both the marriage lines and the 1901 census and at time of marriage lived at 6 Plane Street. His father was called James Hart and he was marked as deceased on William's marriage cert in 1882. I have Elizabeth Leonard's birth cert, she looks to have been an illigitamate child as no fathers name is given and she has her mothers surname. On the marriage cert she is down as living at 23 Back Lane in 1882, but I can not find her either on the 1881 !It's been driving my crazy for quite some time.

Hi i have had no luck.... their doesn't seem to be anything on the census pages...i did find a James & dorothy Hart with children ( called William) in the 1861 or 1871 census but he was born in Middleton, Yorkshire... i thought at first it might be our middleton in Leeds but i don't think it is... Does it just say on his marraige certificate Leeds?
