If you can't raise enough cash from hocking your Hinari portable telly in smack converters to pay your tab at Noble's Amusements, you can always pop in there and stitch up the council for a couple of grand for the injury sustained from slipping on vomit outside the Royal Hotel.(certain events may have been exaggerated for narrative purposes; I do actually like living here!)

I remember there used to be a rent office on Henconner Lane, but that's long gone. So, as the post offices are getting less and less (including Armley which is closing soon) is there anywhere that people can take good old cash. Or is it assumed that everyone has a bank account and will pay by direct debit? 'Good old cash' used to cause the Housing Offices untold problems. Large amounts of it are too tempting for some of our illustrious fellow citizens to resist. On certain days, the security vans used to call at a housing office six or seven times to prevent too much cash being on the premises. You can't have helped noticing the huge steel grilles that were bolted over the windows. Some miscreants once backed up a 4 x 4 to Armley Housing Office, chained it to the steel grille and drove off, ripping out the grille along with half the wall. They scrambled in over the rubble to find that the cash had been cleared out before closing time. Don't laugh, it was your money they were trying to nick, council tenant or not.

I tried not to laugh then Martin, but failed.Similar incident at bookies at Cross Green. They drove a digger, tractor, or something big anyway, into the wall and the wall fell down and buried the safe. Great forward planning.Oh no! I just realised we are wandering away from the original thread. Who cares!!

At the risk of veering back on topic, you can't actually pay your rent at a rent office any more.Neither can you pay your council tax.In fact, you can't pay anything as they don't take payments of any sort any more. This is an "improvement".Rent is to be paid by card over the phone to the city centre office, or via a shop with a PayPoint. I assume you can still send a cheque, but again it's to the offices in town, not your local rent office. You'll be even more astonished to find that you can report repairs, but not to the staff behind the counter. No, now you have to queue up for a single telephone on the wall that is directly linked to the repair reporting line.Which all seems very odd as the rent office near us now employs more staff than I can ever recall, and has moved into plushly refurbished premises, despite offering considerably less in the way of services. This is also an "improvement".

Actually, Armley is one of the best jewels of Leeds. Largest woolen mill in the WORLD at one time, Home of Barbara Taylor Bradford and Allan Bennet, Armley is mentioned in 1086 Domesday Book, Billy liar was part filmed there, the finest example of pipe organ (only one of two in the world) is in St Barts and a street in Armley- St Ives Mount won the accolade of Friendliest Street in Britain. It is a real shame that the idiot council have left this area to stagnate for too long. However, as perviously mentioned they are making massive inroads to revamping the entire western side of Leeds. Armley is to get a massive input of cash to do the job. The local meeting that are held in the "one stop" centre (old library that has been massivley refurbished), also you can pay your rent there.Yes Armley does have it's problems, much like every other part of the city has, yet the scroats that live there are outnumbered 1000 to 1 by the good honesst decent people of Armley. So there!!

(((((((Quote.))))) Jf.........The Post Office is losing money and the co-op (who run it) don't want to maintain this - they have to pay a large amount for the franchise but don't make enough to cover this, particularly as a lot of people now get their benefits paid directly so have no reason to go in there. It will cause problems for a lot of people as the other nearby PO at Moor Top was shut a few years ago. There's one on Tong Road but it's a fair trek for a lot of people and not really big enough. I'm sure something will have to be sorted out as this is an essential facility for a lot of people, especially pensioners in the tower blocks behind the current PO. Residents are likely to kick up a stink if it goes.)))))))Just revisiting this thread as the Post Office shut last week. How are Co-op going to tempt people to buy their 99p earrings and fantastic 'special offers' now?One local MP said 'this is a blow that Armley may never recover from'. Jack Fultons smells like pss and should be checked out by Environmental health. That ex catalogue place is like a large scale jumble sale. Somerfield, well thats just carp .So, apart from the library, theres bugger all there anyway. Am I allowed to say bugger?    Am I allowed to say Jack Fultons : )
