It's possible they moved there from elsewhere but I have seen at least a couple of post wedding photoshoots on the front steps of the Town Hall in the last year or so.
There are two rooms available which are the main venues for civil weddings now. I mean the main hall withe the organ.

In 1945 there was a craze going about when people were trying to run around Leeds Town Hall while the clock was striking 12,one day whilst I was there 15 younger people all tried & failed and on another occasion I tried along with 8 others and we all failed,I was about 15 yards short when the clock made it's 12th chime......I wonder if anyone has achieved this feat officially it looks easy but you would have to be very fit & agile.Does anyone have any recollections of this event???.

Around that period there was a story being told that the Lions outside the Town Hall growled whenever a virgin went passed.???????????????

So that's why the lions have been very quiet in recent times! ;)

Hi Leo - Please correct me if I'm wrong but I was lead to believe that the Town Hall clock did'nt strike 12 midnight so as not to disturb patients sleeping at the Infirmary. Does anyone know if this is true? The lions did however get down and run round the Town Hall, that much is true - mi Dad told mi!!!

Wiljo, my question was if anyone at SL knew if the Town Hall clock did or didn't strike 12 midnight so as not to disturb sleeping patients at the LGI, nothing more, nothing less! By rhe way, there is no such time as 12 a.m or 12 p.m - it's either 12 mid-day or 12 midnight..

I do believe that the architect Cuthbert Broderick based the shape of the town hall clock on the Greco Roman deity Priapus. However due to the controversy and outrage caused by its phallic shape Broderick committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a silver bullet fashioned from the strawberry shaped knob of a sugar bowl given to him by his mother

Hi Johnny39 :)

I don't know if the clock not striking midnight is true or not but it is an interesting idea. With traffic noise (particularly ambulance sirens) and noise from events in Millennium Square it might be quite noisy in LGI nowadays unless it has good soundproofing. I like that the lions run round the Town Hall ;) . They probably however do it late in the night when they see few people about so they know that nobody will believe reports when the person doing that has likely had a few drinks! Leo the Lion 8-).

Good lord a priapic clock! And I only invited my guests to gather round the base of the large organ.
