He might have been too radical for the establishment, but his idea was taken up by the Admiralty for making distilled water more palatable and less "flat". His fizzy water was used by Capatin Cook in his circumnavigation of the globe, though it was others that later really made money from the idea.

I have just googled and did not realise Priestley, Oastler and Smeaton were locals Priestley was from Birstall. There's a statue of him in the market place. He was a Unitarian and I believe at one point minister of Mill Hilll Chapel in Leeds. Apart from inventing carbonated water he also discovered Oxygen - although he didn't call it that. I believe he was involved with some sort of scientific society - the Lunar Society with Matthew Boulton and Benjamin Franklyn among others.

Age 35 in 1768 he was Minister at Mill Hill Chapel in Leeds. You can see his statue just across the road in City Sq, outside the old POps LeoI like the way this thread is crafted and has developed. I never knew this and had walked past the statue unaware.

On page 19 of today's YEP there is an article relating to Joseph Priestley. There is to be a special event on October 12 2012 in Birstall to mark the 100th anniversary of the unveiling of the statue of Joseph Priestley that stands in Birstall Market Place.

I wonder if that's how the Americans got their soda pop, cream soda etc?      Good old Priestley! He's just gone up in my estimation. Interesting that I should read this post this afternoon, when I'm looking at SL instead of all the sycophantic nonsense on the telly.

The local college of further education in Morley and Rothwell is called "The Joseph Priestley Institute of FE" In the old West Riding days it also operated in Batley too. I recall joining to go to Rugby Training at Batley High School - basically Morley RUFC's Tuesday night gym sessions!
