BERYL BURTON A MORLEY LASSKnown as the Yorkshire Flyer, she was the most prolific cycling championship winner of all time. She had a tally of titles not even the great Eddy Merckx could rival. Her career spanned over a quarter of a century and the Morley CC heroine won 122 national championships and was Britain's best all round women's time-trial champion from 1959 to 1984 !One sunday in 1967 in the Otley CC 12 Mike McNamara was about to set a national 12 hour time trial record of 276.52 miles, thus breaking the existing 9 year-old record. But Beryl who started two minutes behind McNamara, overtook him and covered 277.25 miles before the clock called time. She'd grown up a sickly child and took to cycling for therapeutic reasons.Crediting success to Yorkshire grit and a healthy outdoor life as a rhubarb growerHer daughter raced alongsider her in the British team 1972 Barcelona. In 1996 shortly before her 59th birthday Beryl Burton OBE collapsed and died of a heart attack while out on a training ride.

Beryl used to be a regular sight around Morley on her bike, although at the time when someone pointed her out to me it didnt mean a lot as I was only a teenager.

Surprisingly, Beryl has only managed passing inckusion in past threads here - perhaps because cycling was a minoriry sport with a rather limited following and memories therefore likewise, except for a few of us.

She wasn't (born) a Morley lass though.

SommeShe 'chose' Morley (born Halton I think).Nice little extra about her:-"Burton's involvement with the sport that dominated her life came about by chance. Her first job as a teenager was in a tailoring firm in Leeds where she noticed a young man make a clicking noise as he walked across the factory floor. This was Charlie Burton and he was wearing cycling shoes with metal cleats on their soles. She married Charlie when she was 17 and he remained in the backgrond throughout her career as helpmate, mechanic and companion. His family provided Burton with the support that allowed her to continue her racing career after daughter Denise was born in 1955."

Interesting where the Burton connection came from.....I didn't know that.
