No matter how you look at it . . restructure. . recession whatever it still stinks. All them years service and loyalty and pride in his job and probably some whizzkid decides poor fella is getting made redundant.Surely the place needs a manager. . .wonder who they have got lined up already to fill his shoes.

The General Manager of the Grand is to take over Peter's duties as well as his own. The sad picture of Peter in the audtorium when the news was announced a couple of days ago was telling enough, but the one in Saturday's YEP is even more heartwrenching. The whole affair is an utter scandal - I think it safe to say that if Peter hadn't been the totally dedicated guiding light behind the renovation, and all the modern complex legislation involved, its possible that the theatre may have gone under !!
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I bet the General Manager of The Grand is glad his workload is increased. . unless he's had a pay rise and even then its a false economy. . .why don't they just let the chap stay till his retirement? This should not be allowed to happen.Reminds me of a person quite close to home. . .25 years ago she set up a superb clinic. . .a couple of years ago this restructuring came in and everyone had to apply for their own jobs. . surprise , surprise she didn't get her own job so she took it to the tribunal and WON.The judge said she had done a remarkable job and the knowledge she knew was just too valuable to dismiss. She got hefty compo but she would have loved to have seen her career out in her own time. Why does no one admire and respect long service any more? Its all about money and targets and paying stupid money to those who monitor money and targets isn't it.Gone are the days when you got a gold watch.

I don't know if it applies here, but I understand that currently across larges swathes of public sector workers, if you get made redundant it comes out of a "central" pot with the employer (council, etc). This can mean a big difference to the specific department who would otherwise have to keep paying whatever salary out of their own budget. It's also one of the reasons that the public sector like to give people early retirement - it's that central pot of money again, rather than the departments specific budget.I must say that given the high esteem this chap seems to have been held in, it's a crying shame that they couldn't retain his experience and services for a few more years rather than simply pushing him out of the door. It's even more ironic that he's been made redundant no dount due to tightened budgets when some halfwit has just spent £500,000 on the "Underwhelmed and Overpriced" art installations across the city centre for a few days.

Too true !! Even half of that obscene amount would have ensured Mr. Sandeman's salary for the five years up to normal retirement age. He should be reinstated at once, with a meaningful and public apology, and whoever even thought of this wicked farce should be on the receiving end of similar treatment !!
