My dad was a printer's compositor. He served his apprenticeship on the Leicester Mercury newspaper. Called up in 1940, he was posted to Bradford, and billeted out to Farsley, where he met and married my mother. After the war we went to Leicester, but moved to Calverley in 1953. He worked at the Yorkshire Post, and at a firm called Knight & Forster on Water Lane, quite close to Pettys. ISTR this firm surviving until quite recently - does anyone know if it still exists (OK, I should have looked on the net; I will when I've posted this).By coincidence, I had a girlfriend in Calverley whose father was in charge of the Reading Room at Pettys. His surname was Dean, and was referred to at work as The Dean of Reading. By an even greater coincidence, both he and my dad finished up working at Watmoughs, a large printer in Bradford, later taken over by Polestar and closed down. The whole of the site is now covered by housing.

Looked for Knight & Forster on the web. There's a 2009 picture showing the building as derelict, and Google doesn't chuck up anything else, so looks like the firm is now defunct - like so many printers.

gbdlufc wrote: last go I cannot download photos if I use my AOL but I can if I use Internet Explorer (IE). From what I gather the SL site seems only to take IE for photos, as using such as Firefox will not work. That may help you. I hope you manage to download photos.

Alf Cookes has been branded "The Printworks" and is being developed as offices by Rushbond." The company has so far declined to put a value on its proposed investment in the site or the extent to which the scheme is speculative. Its plans include proposals for a new public space in the development which will also feature art reflecting the site’s history." - locateinleeds
