That's where the hole is in relation to the air raid hatch.

I don't think it's connected to the air raid shelter in all honesty.I think the shelter was really only the shops cellar. The hatch is an added escape route if the building took a direct hit. I think the shelter goes no further than the shops foundations. I can't see them digging up Otley Road during the war years to build a sizeable shelter under that particluar shop.Any more thoughts??

It's a good thing the hole did not open up when traffic was on top of it!Talking of holes in roads there was one that appeared a few weeks back at the junction of King Lane and The Avenue in Alwodley. The hole looked to be about 30cm (probably more) deep and spread about a metre or more overall with some of it covered by a still intact but overhanging road surface that was only a few centimetres thick. Some barriers were put up to keep taffic off but it was several days before the hole was filled. It's worrying really just what can be immediately below a road surface.

There is a massive hole right by the side of the M1 that's been there for years...oh hang on, it's Sheffield!

I'm surprised more holes or hollows are not observed. I was looking at a map of Wortley from the Old Maps site showing the location of coal seams and mine works and the whole area is peppered with old pit shafts - I doubt if most of these were ever filled in.
