Hi Leeds Lad Back to the lights topic better lighting tends to be a deterrant the scrotes tend to be like rats they prefer the dark also if you have an alarm fitted they will tend to go elsewhere.I say if you play on the track you could be hit by the train if you know what i mean.

Having given it a month or so to get used to the new lights, I have to say that, on the whole, I preferred the old ones. There seem to be two heights to the lamp posts fitted within the estates - shorter ones on quieter streets, often on both sides of the street, with taller ones on busier roads but only along one side of the street. The light given by both is quite a harsh white light and is quite focussed on a specific area - good if the lights shines on that area, but it leaves a distinct and (apparently) darker shadow where it doesn't shine. The shorter lamp posts also seem to be at such a height that as you drive down the street across the focussed pools of light that it sets of a frequency / flash of light on your windscreen that can be distracting not to mention slightly distracting. The taller lamp posts don't seem to suffer from this anomoly, but are spaced that far apart (as well as only being on one side of the street) that once one of them goes off (as they surely will) that a considerable length of the street will be plunged into near total darkness until it is fixed. The specific aim of the lamps mean that little if any ambient light is spread about, unlike the older types. It's enough to make you feel nostalgic for the old sodium lights (a couple of which seem to have escaped the axe - maybe this could be a new thread in years to come?)

[quotenick="raveydavey"]Having given it a month or so to get used to the new lights, I have to say that, on the whole, I preferred the old ones.I agree wholeheartedly - I much preferred the old orange ones which gave some sort of continuous light to the entire area. I've tried my best to "give the new ones a fair chance" but to no avail and I think they are downright dangerous. Its no use having floodlit lighting of intermittent stretches with virtually pitch black in between.    Despite all the "hype" I suspect that the primary reason for these new lights is their economical power consumption, with "safety" a very poor second.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

The same thing happened again in Leeds when Connaught went bust.
