However you'll only get standard lens witha limited zoom supplied and will have to fork out for a decent zoom. A 'bridge' camera is a halfway between a compact and an SLR. You'll probably get a better zoom range, but slightly poorer quality lens and limited functionality compared to an SLR but more opportunities to play than a compact, with the choice of fully auto. However perfomance shoudl still be good and shutter delay negligable. Which? recomends this as its best buy: Canon Powershot SX10 ISI haven't used one. I like Nikons. They are the best and everyone who disagrees is wrong. I think this proves that you should find a camera that is good and you feel comfortable with. Thanks, Cardi.PS I also had a Nikon nicked.

Cheers, Chameleon. The Contax I've got is an RTS - for Real Time System. The shutter is released electronically, rather than by cable. This shows that, apparently, photographers in the 70s/80s were worried about the infintessimally small time delay (if any) between the two systems. Nowadays, in digital, it seems to be any where between two seconds and a tenth of a second! Does the auto sequential shooting make a noise like a motor-wind?!

Well i jumped in at the deep end as i wanted a camera for a trip to Canada on a Polar Bear safari type thing,so i went for a DSLR,which gives you the option of lens change. After a lot of deliberation I went for the Canon 450D.Digger swears by Nikon, and ive found an awful lot of Nikon fans but im more than happy with the Canon. Its easy to use,has a large screen which can have a live view (and you can autofocus on live view on the screen.)It has all the auto settings and all the finer settings that anewbie can handle.theres also more lenses available than you can shake a stick at.

I will wear the flag for Nikon with pride here lol.I've had mine for three years, it's been through the wars with me, dropped more times than i care to remember, and still going strong.Nikon S.L.R's are well known to be the easiest, most user friendly camera on the market.A great and invaluable (especially to me) feature the Nikon has a Canon doesn't, Is you can 'lock the focus' in dim or no light situations. The colour and contrast Nikon has (in my experience from comparing shots from cannon users who have been out with me) is far superior to the Cannon.

My choice, after a lot of deliberation a year or so ago was the Olympus E500. I tried several DSLR's on the market, but found the familiarity of the Olympus much more favourable. I had the om1 for years. Always wanted a Nikon, but found that the ones on the market wwere quite heave and a bit cumbersome. Probably why the buggers last so long. Davey, just go round the various shops and try out the various items on sale, then look at the various Which reports in camera mags and then make the choice. It's all personal choice in the end, so just do yer homework.
