Hmm, I know what you mean, Blakey. While the F&C were far and away better than any of the rubbish you get in London, they weren’t too sparkling and, to heap insult on ignominy, they were in a polystyrene box! Coes are definately not up to the standard they once were and seem to vary in quality considerably at different times of the week.I had some on a Saturday teatime a couple of months back and they were absolutely rank - to the point where I binned them rather than finish them. Yet the shop was busy and I had to queue for them, so presumably not a case of 'warm ups'. In my humble opinion, Coes haven't been the same since they changed the shop round (from having the counter and fryers running the length of the shop) to the 'new' design with the counter across the front of the shop. In about 1985 that was, I think.... At the risk of veering off topic and starting a different thread, the best F&C's in East Leeds are now at the Skyliner at Austhorpe. Bit of a pain to get to though. Si wrote: raveydavey wrote: ...Pork Pies. Now, being an East Leeds lad, I always assumed that the finest growlers were from Wilsons of Crossgates (and Morley). They are championship winners after all and (according to the sign) have featured on the Terry Wogan show. However, I was in Otley the other day and passed Weegmanns butchers and remember my old dad used to swear by their pork pies, to the point that if we were in Otley he used to go buy one.So, I went and bought one myself and I have to say it was the finest pork pie I can ever recall having. It really was that good. But later on while still in Otley, I passed another butchers (Geo Stephensons?) who also had signs up proclaiming their award winning pork pies. Having already purchased a pie from Weegmanns, I foolishly decided not to sample their wares, but now regret this and intend to put it right on my next visit (in the interests of research, obviously). But the question remains - who makes the best pork pies in Leeds? Hi Davey. The Geo Stephenson's you refer to could be Geo Wilkinson's (Boroughgate) or Middlemiss' (to the left of The Black Bull.) Middlemiss has a sign in the window proclaiming championship winning pies, 2008. I've not had a pie from Wilkinson's, but can vouch for both Weegman's and Middlemiss'. I'm told the latter's pies are made by the people who had the pork butchers on Bondgate, now sadly closed. I personally prefer Middlemiss' pastry, but Weegman's meat, but they're very close! I'm a fussy bugger!     I think it must have been Wilkinsons - however now you've added another pie maker to the mix - mrs ravey will not be impressed when I purchase 3 growlers on my next visit to Otley to establish a favourite

'At the risk of veering off topic and starting a different thread, the best F&C's in East Leeds are now at the Skyliner at Austhorpe. Bit of a pain to get to though.'Used to go there for a while Davey but had some bad days when the oil just ran out of the fish in pools. Right put us off - and you don't get much, but these days that could be a good thingDon't partake too often now but have returned to the one on Austhorpe Road, must have been going for 30 years or more, I think it's still in the familly but suspect 'mum & dad' have retired. As for portion size, ah! BTW, Wilsons make pies in the thousands each week and supply quite a lot of other outlets so you might be eating their's and not knowing it. They've won a few awards, but nothing for a couple of years now I think.

Must admit that you always did a good sized portion there , although I've not been in for a long while. I used to live literally just up the road so probably visited them far more than was healthy in the mid 90's.Do they still have the pickled eggs in the jar on the counter?

Best in Morley? Hillycroft, best value and nearly as good as Hillycroft? Ingle Fisheries on Ingle Avenue.Best in Leeds? Drakes on Scott Hall Road, the Art Deco one at Oakwood, Bretts.Peggottys in Rothwell is good too.

I'll put in a recomendation for the Chip Shop by St Michaels Church in Headingley. It was Oak fisheries for many years, run by a bloke call Dennis IIRC. Became a Midgleys and went down hill. It's now called something like Sammy's. I entered with trepidation expecting to be assailed by a wide variety of food, none done very well, but was pleasantly suprised to find a good traditional chippy, fish fried to order, quality chips and generous portions. Recomended.

Recomended. I remember the Oak Fisheries being really superb many years ago when I lived in Cardigan Road. I didn't know the chap's name, but I clearly recall a smallish fellow, rather tanned in appearance and with a little black "tache" - would that be Dennis ??
