i was born near the hol beck, but brought up on gipton, which is mentioned in the doomsday book and stretched from colton to chapletown road.all the farms and manor houses have gone, yet a few victorian mansions still exist.where the eight shops(or whats left of them) stand, there was a row of ancient cottages, along with beautiful farm houses all over the 'estate',some of which can be seen on leodis.alas, most of this was demolished to make way for the council estate, just before the last war.people now think of gipton as been just that,a council estate, yet it was called the gipton estate for a hell of a long time before the houses were built and now, like too many areas of leeds, its once rich history is gone, all but forgotten 'mongst the mists of time....

The original settlement of Morley was based around Morley Bottoms. St Mary's church higher up the hill is on a site occupied by places of worship for over 1000 years.

Walden, Sharp, Silman and Lewis indeed! My family's GPs from when Dr Sharp first started in Practice, using the hall as a waitng area and the 'parlor' at the rear of my Great Aunt's small cottage (on the old road, past Poplar House in Seacroft) as his surgery.I remember Dr Walden's daughter, Fay starting - and now you say his Grandaughter... suddenly feeling my years here

I'll have a look - anything else? theres lots, going up hill top there are some rather grand gates on th left hand side, as you look up the hill. Obviously not built for the present house, but must have been a decent residence at one time??

exiled in essex wrote: I was born in 1972 in Scholes and lived there until 2006. It's still very much a village (no village green though) and the people of Scholes have fought to keep it that way. How long it will remain that way is anybody's guess though as I believe the council have been wanting to build around it for years. It used to be protected by green belt land but I'm not sure if that is the case any more. Plans have already been drawn up under the UDP a few years ago to build an "Outer Outer Ring Road" dual carriageway leaving the current Outer Ring Road betwixt Harrogate Road and Red Hall which will skirt around the North of Red Hall, cross Wetherby Road (bridge) and go between Whinmoor and Thorner, cross York Road (another bridge), then go between Swarcliffe and Scholes, before skirting around the side of Pendas Fields and Austhorpe before joining the M1 extension at Thorpe Park (near Sainsburys). The plan goes on to state that the areas either side of said new road will be developed for industrial, commercial and residential use. There should have been a massive public outcry about this at the time, but it was barely mentioned. My local ward councillor actaully sent a leaflet to every home stating the far reaching effects of the plan and stating that people needed to be aware of what it contained, but people just don't seem aware of what is about to happen under their noses...Oh, and back to the thread subject, I lived nearly all my formative years in Seacroft like Parksider...
