Does anyone know what caused this damage?

As of yesterday seemed like extensive repairs being made here. Only drove past but looked to be new stonework going in.

I've not passed the site for many weeks now but I did so on June 22 2017 and I noticed that the repair work seems to have finished since rikj's post on Apr 10 2017, so I took this photo. The new stones will need time to weather-in to look similar to the old ones!
