About 1960 On our half day we used to go to Cookridge Street Baths near was the Gaumont Cinema. think it was about 10/-. you were given a cubicle and large towels there were various steam rooms, some hotter than others. in those days you were careful not to get into conversation with anyone else in there apart from our pals as just the odd times there were guys sat there on the wooden forms who did not have the towel around them. Then you could go in a wooden box that you sat in with just your head sticking out. looking back i think it was how the "River Kwai" prisoners may have been treated. After that you were asked to lay on a table and a masseur would throw hot soapy water over you and give you a really good rub down. finally you were given a cubicle with a bed in and you rested (Needed) They sold tea and toast while you lay in there.
We used to emerge from the Baths thinking we have lost a bit of weight in there but then it was up to a club for a game of snooker and one was certainly ready for two or three pints.
Forgot to mention the needle shower, you stood inside this round metal box and it emitted powerful jets of water at you from all sides, head to foot. hard to even breathe in there.
