School wars

Do schools still fight each other nowadays or are kids all whisked home by car to play on their x-boxes?I went to Lawnswood in the early 80's and there were regular battles with Moor Grange and Abbey Grange (who were generally everyones whipping boys). I seem to remember one poor kid getting killed on the railway line and the rumour was he'd run down there to avoid a gang from one of the other schools.The Stainbeck V John Bosco's/Cardinal Heenan fights were a legendary element of Meanwood schooldays too, with the added spice of a sectarian clash as the catholics of Heenan took on the Protestants of Stainbeck.I'm sure these rivalries took place all over Leeds and are looked back on fondly by a generation of dads as they load the kids into the people mover at 3.30!

i went to abbey grange when that kid got killed on the railway. i don't want to stray off topic, but believe me when i say he wasn't chased onto the lines by us, we were shouting him to get off the line, for weeks afterwards the rumour of us chasing him went on. we had to get our parents to drop us at the school gates so we didn't get 'chinned' our bright red jumpers were like a beacon to the rival schools.

Remember in the early 90s when I was at allerton High school ther was bitter rivalry with Cardinal Heenan. Always used to meet at the ols Sainys at Moor Allerton Centre outside Burger King and Measons (remember when it was that) for some right rumbles. Was always a spectator though quietly going about getting my lunch.

I believe the lads from Agnes Stewart and Mount St Mary's had a couple of 'meetings' too ...

Yes i remember the Corpus Christi vs Temple Moor 'meetings' although i never actually witnessed one myself so couldnt comment on them

I used to live on the street next to Abbey Grange and remember that the lad who got killed was listening to his walkman while walking home to the Hawksworth estate and couldn't hear the train coming. Cue loads of fighting in the woods behind our house with loads of schoolkids.On a different note, Tinshill where i went used to have a rivalry with Holt Park and i remember going up Tinny Lane a few times and groups of lads would stare at each other feeling hard until boredom set in and we went home.

oh yes! cross green in early 80s,we did aggies and mount st marys in the same lunch time.at least they would turn up.....more than what corpus ever did!

i went to broad lane middle in bramley, from day one we were warned not to get into trouble with bramley c of e. i never saw any trouble but it scared me when i was 9!

I went to Farnley Park High, formerly Harrington High, and it was said that West Leeds Boys (now flats I believe) were our sworn enemies, with older lads gathering to fight each other with bats and chairs and the like.That said, it always seemed a long way to go for a fight, right over from Farnley to Armley, so maybe it was all rumour.It was also rumoured that Mr Hilditch, or PE teacher, was a streetfighter, which impressed us enough to stay on his good side, only years later did I realise that I have no idea what a streetfighter is...........

I attended West Leed Boys high and never saw the "alleged" scraps between Farnley high and ourselves. I went i nthe late 70's and I can only remembr one occasion when a few from our met a few form FH and had a bit of a do down near the ressi!! Nowt to write home about. Other than that, nowt..My son has just started Wortley high, formerly Silverroyd Girls school. The usual story is that his school and West Leeds ( new mixed ) are supposed to meet up for a ruck!! Gonna be reet good fun when they merge the two eh ??
