Woodhouse Moor reservoir.

In John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire' vol 2 it states for September 30 1863 "The Leeds town council decided to cover Woodhouse moor reservoir, at a cost of £5863. 13s. 7d." (I love such precise figures).In the Woodhouse Moor entry in the online Wikipedia encyclopaedia it states for the reservoir "The land was acquired by Leeds Corporation for the sum of £3,000 on 19 May 1857. Clarendon Road, which runs alongside Woodhouse Moor, used to be Reservoir Street because of a reservoir belonging to Leeds Corporation Waterworks. The reservoir was begun in 1837, after cholera epidemics swept Leeds in 1832, and was covered over in 1863. Two stone lodges were built alongside the reservoir in 1840; one still stands (behind the gardener's cottage near the Victoria Monument); the other was converted into an observatory in 1906, and subsequently demolished."Does anyone know if the reservoir is still there (but covered) or has it been filled in at some stage? If it is still there does it still hold water and where does it run in and out (presumably underground). I have not been able to readily find out. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for that information Cardiarms. I had assumed that the reservoir had been somewhere in the cleared area on the right of the A660 (coming out of Leeds) on Woodhouse Moor where the feasts used to be held. Edit straight after posting. Thanks also Mick. Your post came in while I was still typing mine and I sent it in before I saw your post.

Looking at uncle micks breakdown of costs it looks like it was covered over .It does not state anything about hardcore I would have thought it would if they had filled it in. PS Cardiarms beat me to it.

I've noticed when I've passed by the Woodhouse Moor reservoir on the 56 bus that there has been a couple of tents pitched on top of it for the past few months. I believe the tent, or at least one of them is still there, right opposite where the halls of residence are. God knows if someone is living in it! Maybe its someone making a point about lack of social housing in Leeds? Or a skint student who cant afford the extortionate rents charged around the LS6 area?!
