While I was in the centre of Leeds in late a.m. to early p.m. today I noticed that all of many ATMs that I passed had queues, several 10+. I did begin to wonder if there was some banking news that I was unaware of that had caused concern! I guess people are beginning to draw cash out for Christmas shopping (unless there really was something I was not aware of!).PS. On doing this thread I became aware that I was not sure what ATM stands for. It's automated/automatic teller machine (OK I'm probably the only one to not know!).

I've noticed before that Leeds City Centre seems to have more queues at its cash machines than a lot of other cities - I've spent time in Sheffield and Manchester and never noticed it there. I always thought that Leeds either has fewer or worse-placed cash points than other places. Odd.As an aside, ATM is indeed Automated Teller Machine. I worked in the Middle East; Qatar to be specific; and on my first day or so there went around asking for the nearest cash machine and they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Its an ATM or bust it seems these days!

Cheers SuddenElite. The (mostly) convenience of ATMs makes me wonder how we ever managed before them!

Perhaps Leodensians prefer to pay in cash but those form other cities don't? I, too, notice that Leeds seems to have more queues at ATMs/cash machines/minibanks than other places. Do we have more smaller shops, cafes and bars which accept cards readily?

I don't know.....just an observation......can't be nothing worse than standing in a long queue to obtain your own money back from an anonymous hole in a wall.Bit of sheep like mentality baa baa....(only kidding folks)....Maybe just impulsive purchases instead !

Do people remember the first ATM's that Natwest had.I think theirs were the first. When you put in your card you could get £10 out and the card came back in the post. Still that was in the days when £10 was worth having!
