This is from John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire' vol 1 published in 1861.October 23 1823. "October 23rd, was laid the foundation stone of the South market, in Hunslet and Meadow-lanes, Leeds...In the centre is a circular temple, composed of twelve Doric pillars outside, and the same number inside. The outer ones support a bold entabulature, and above rises a large cupola...It is enriched by twelve small attached columns, and covered in with a hemispherical leaded dome. Encircling this building, is a double series of stalls...This market is not used except for the holding of the leather fairs." (I have omitted much of the report). In information that I've found it stated the South Market was not a success and from 1827 quarterly leather fairs were held there. This link is to a photo in Leodis http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL. It was an interesting looking building that must have been demolished at some time. This link should bring up more information on the South Market (and other markets in Leeds) http://www.leodis.net/discovery/discove ... 5_72673977
