Leeds news on today's date (Oct 22) in 1864.

The following is from John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire':-October 22 1864. "The foundation stone of a new Congregational Church for the district of Headingley, near Leeds, was laid this day, in the presence of a large assembly, an admirable site being selected for the proposed building. It is situated between Woodhouse Moor and Headingley, at the bottom of Cumberland Street, and possesses a frontage to Headingley Lane. The church, which is in the Gothic style of architecture, with spire, will accommodate 800 persons; school and class rooms, deacons and minister's vestry, residence for the church keeper, &c, are also to be provided..." (there was more).From what I have found it seems the building is still there but known as City Church, though it is at the junction of Cumberland Road and Headingley Lane as there does not seem to be a Cumberland Street (that may have been the road name then or perhaps it is an error in the Annals). I have added a 2012 Google Street view of City Church, with its nice spire.I like the description of Headingley as being "near Leeds" then.

The Church is one of Cuthbert Brodrick's 'other' / lesser known buildings:-.."Headingley Hill Congregational church, 1864 (now known as the Ashwood Centre and used by City Church Leeds).."
