Whenever I mention to work colleagues that Leeds is one of the biggest cities in Britain they disagree. Can the following link be verified by someone who knows about populations or has access to the official data.http://www.ukcities.co.uk/populations/
Is it me or has Leeds gone mad

Looks about right. People can argue about boundaries and conurbations but within the definition of a city we're there or there abouts.

Hi BookIn the Leeds City Council website it states "The results of the 2011 Census show that Leeds has a population of 751,500 living in 320,600 households. The Census took place on 27 March 2011".This is the link to the webpage I found that in:- http://www.leeds.gov.uk/council/Pages/L ... on.aspxThe webpage brought up by that link had itself a link to a 'Leeds Observatory' website in which it states it is a "resource is for anyone looking to find out more about communities and geographies in Leeds." It seems to be a useful and interesting website.

Interesting to note that according to the ukcities link that book provided even adding Salford's population (215000) to Manchester's (420000) Leeds (720000) is still ahead.

But if you add the immediately adjacent towns it soon ramps up.

Already covered to some extent by answers on the thread. Most of the figures seem to cover the relevant council area and the Leeds figure is for the current Leeds City Council area previously the Metropolitan District. It therefore covers Otley, Wetherby, Rothwell, Morley and a large part Pudsey plus more rural areas in between.I do think though that there is a large element of not comparing like with like, which as I recall has been discussed in previous threads. The City of London is more or less literally a square mile so doesn't hold anything like the 720,000 quoted. It like its neigbour the City of Westminster both have councils. Since the abolition of GLC London doesn't have an overarching council. I suspect the London figure is comprised of the aforementioned cities and all the other boroughs involved in electing the Mayor. Under the same rationale Manchester would include at least the Borough of Trafford but I suspect it doesn't. The Birmingham figure seems suspiciously high so may actually include the population of separate West Midlands councils like Solihull and Dudley.

Having a good memory I remember in the 1980's Leeds wasclassified as being the 5th or 6th largest population in theCountry. It was always fighting with Sheffield to have thelarger amount.I am chuffed now to see that my Leeds is the 3rd.Just to add a note about the population. I use Ancestryto research my ancestors and have had a 2 year fightwith them regarding Leeds. Its a Canadian company and seem to have no idea aboutBritish places and how big they are. When I was researching my hundreds of relatives who comefrom Leeds, Yorkshire, on the drop down box for Leeds theonly one in this Country was Leeds in Kent. I wrote quite a few times that Leeds in Kent had only 5,000people living there and that Leeds and its classed surroundingarea has 2.7million people and is the capital of Yorkshire. It took for what seems forever but they now include Leeds,Yorkshire on their drop down box, and my head is swellingwhen I say due to me laugh.

Pretty much every time I do a search based on Leeds I have to confirm that I mean Leeds Yorkshire and Leeds Kent is usually the first choice. I don't search fro Bradford much but I presume we are talking Bradford on Avon.
