The following is from John Mayhall’s ‘Annals of Yorkshire’ vol 2:-August 22 1863. “Several cricketers were fined by the Leeds Magistrates for playing on Woodhouse Moor, contrary to the bye-laws. An appeal came before the Recorder on the 27th October, when the convictions were quashed, he being of opinion that as a question of title founded upon usage was involved in the case, the Justices summary jurisdiction was ousted”.Mind you I think it may be still best to check bye-laws if you intend playing cricket on Woodhouse Moor, as there could be old laws that have never been repealed and you may find yourself being sent to penal servitude in Australia!
