The River Aire has burst its banks... City Station has been shut down 'for the foreseeable future'...Not a day to go tunnelling, I think.

Aye, I passed the railway near the Bridge pub and it was under a few feet of water. Never seen the river as high. If the dividing wall was to give way millions of gallons of water would deluge the whole railway there!!!!!

There must be lots of stories around Leeds about the torrential rainfall all day, here is a snapshot of the Cock Beck in full flow at Aberford, the local residents living in certain knowledge that if it didn't stop, any amount of sandbags would be useless!

Yeah, it's been nuts today - the A64 near Thorner was under about a foot of water this afternoon, and bits of Scholes were well flooded. Water lapping at my front door when I got in, lucky escape involving a bucket and plenty of bailing out onto the lawn....Anyone got any photos of the carnage at the station - sounds as though it's well full on.

The 'Emergency Procedures' kicked in at the Town Hall which meant PEPU went into effect in the basement where the police station used to be (if I explain what that means, I may get in trouble), & the Victoria Hall was opened for people to come & take refuge in if they could not get home. They brought one of the City Organists to play for the entertainment of damp refugees. It was very Blitz Spirit!The Town Hall Staff looked like they might have a long night ahead of them...

I wandered into town when it became apparent that something highly unusual was going on. This is a pic of Hol Beck, probably a good 2 metres higher than normal. I had a look in the Dark Arches and the water was hitting the bottom of the footbridge, scary.

Yes, I just wanted that pic for the comparison. This one was taken around 3 weeks ago when phil and I went down there.I reckon the volume of water must have increased around 40-50 fold, which is an enormous amount. It shows that the design of these old culverts is spot on. The deep fast flowing channel in the middle is pretty much self cleaning, and the high sides mean these once in 10 years floods can be coped with.Unfortunately they don't seem to be maintained as well anymore and some of the stones are coming loose. Wouldn't surprise me if they've been ripped out now.
