The following are reported in John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire':-Vol 1. June 27 1795. "On June 27th, general Cameron reviewed the Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, and Wakefield volunteers upon Chapeltown moor: at this grand military spectacle were present 60,000 spectators and 300 carriages. The wise system of inclosing productive land and rendering it conducive to the support of an immensely increasing population, rendered it necessary that this plot of ground containing more than 300 acres, should be applied to other purposes, and Chapeltown moor has long since disappeared."I'm assuming that the Chapeltown is that in Leeds and not the one in Sheffield, as there is no mention of Sheffield in the report. Vol 3. June 27 1867. "A large corn mill, belonging to Mr. J. Clough, at Holbeck, Leeds, was totally destroyed by fire this morning, with a great quantity of grain that was stored in it. The value of the property lost through the fire was estimated at £10,000. A destructive fire also took place at the Wellington Woollen Mills, Bramley, occupied by Mr. W. Farrar Smith, of Leeds."Using an inflation valuing feature in the Bank of England website the £10,000 is equivalent to about £918,000 today at 3.1% inflation a year.
