The following are recorded in John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire'.June 17 1867. "The Leeds Town Council agreed to purchase for £6000 a field opposite the market in Camp Road, for the purpose of increasing the market accomodation."I have been unable to readly find any information about a market at Camp Road (assuming it is the Camp Road that is now called Oatland Lane) and would be grateful if anyone could give me some information.June 17 1871. "A knur and spell match for £100 was played at the Cardigan Grounds, Leeds, between H. Smith, alias Throstle, of Low Moor, near Bradford, and S. Moss, of Pudsey; Smith being allowed ten scores in thirty rises. Smith gained the lead in the first rise, and gradually increased it to the end of the game, when he had scored 291, Moss 266, Smith winning the match by twenty-five scores, exclusive of the ten scores given him."

Camp road seems to have run on from Wade Lane and seems to be where is now the lower part of Lovell Park road. The 1872 whites directory show Smithfield cattle market between Back Brunswick St and the Corporation Hotel (on 1850 map Campfield House), with Grafton St a little further up. The market is not shown on the 1850 or later 1890s maps, so maybe they changed their minds and moved the market elsewhere

LeodianHave just noticed the record you posted of 16th june 1858. Presumably the removal of business to Wakefield is why the scheme was never proceded with and the market disappeared (or was re;ocated)

In that information it states "the old cattle market situated on Camp Road was moved to a site on Gelderd Road, and was called the Victoria Cattle Market".I like this of the then new market "The fish market, at the top, and the square with its central fountain were built...The right hand or southern row held the Game and the Egg and Butter Market...Beyond the fish market was an area where dogs and birds were sold." I wonder what happened to the fountain?
