The following is reported in John Mayhall’s ‘Annals of Yorkshire’ on today’s date (June 14) in 1869:-June 14 1869. “A new Chapel, in East Street, Leeds, was opened as a place of worship. The foundation stone was laid on Whit-Tuesday, 1868. The cost of the building, together with the land, was about £2,000.”I have tried to find out about this Chapel but have not been able to readily find anything (including the Leodis website). I wonder if anyone knows any information, or at least where the Chapel was or possibly still is but perhaps used for something else now.

It's certainly difficult to find out any information about this one! The only chapel, or church, which I've been able to find is not exactly on East Street but on Atlas Street/Timber Place, but it was called East Street Methodist Church (may possibly have been known as East Street New Chapel when it was opened) and there are some photos of this on Leodis if you search for Atlas Street. It was demolished in 1907/8 but there's nothing about when it was opened.I've attached a map from the 1890s to show where it was.In my next post I'll attach an article about the opening of the chapel from the Leeds Mercury on 15 June 1869.

Many thanks Tasa for your posts, which are extremely interesting. In the Leeds Mercury report I particularly liked "The warming of the chapel in cold weather will be effected by hot air, which will rise through ornamental air grates in the floor". Cold pews can be very discomforting, particularly if a sermon is going on too long! It was nice to see a response to this thread of mine, as there had been few views (which has increased a lot since your replies). I've noticed that my Leeds 'Today's date in the past' threads do get very few views until there is at least a reply. Though they are subjects that may not be expected to get a response I am dismayed that they still get so few views compared to other threads. There was nothing I felt worth posting about today's date (June 15) in the past but I am thinking of stopping doing these threads in view of their obvious lack of interest to most SL viewers.
