What was this aeroplane doing?

Shortly after 11:30 this morning when I was going into Leeds on a bus on Scott Hall Road I noticed an aeroplane to the right. It had a very conspicuous object raised on its roof. I wonder if the object may have been a radome or was it something else? I believe there was a military excercise today in the region so perhaps it had something to do with that. As it was on the roof I doubt it was a camera taking new images for Google Maps, but you never know. Did anyone else spot the aeroplane?

I didn't see the plane in question, but there is a major multi-national military exercise taking place in Scotland next week (Operation Joint Warrior 2012), so it might have had something to do with that?http://www.raf.mod.uk/news/archive/ex-j ... 2042012Did the plane look like the middle one here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_E-3_Sentry

Cheers raveydavey. Yes it did look a lot like the middle one. The raised object may have been more forward but I'm unsure of that.
