There is a report on page 8 of the YEP today about the explosion at Barnbow 95 years ago today on December 5 1916 which killed 35 women workers. In the report it states "the East Leeds History and Archaeology Society is planning to renovate a memorial to the victims on Cross Gates Road, which was installed in 2005". In the report it also states "Barnbow was Britain's top shell factory during the First World War and produced a total of 566,000 tons of ammunition, which was shipped overseas. The factory opened in December 1915 and by October the following year, there were 16,000 people working on the site".

The memorial was built at thr old tram terminus just before the roundabout Leodian, on the site of the demolished public toilet block. Sadly like so much, it has been neglected. There should be a picture in the main Barnboe thread I think, and possibly on Leodis.
