'Site of the Park Bulls'.

On the 1850 1:1056 map in the Old Maps UK in the area between the Green Dragon Yard and Butts Court (both then off Guildford Street, now The Headrow) it states 'Site of the Park Bulls' (the latter could be Bull as it is hard to be definite). The 1891 1:500 Old Maps UK does not state the site. I've not been able to readily find any information on what the Park Bulls (or Bull) were so I wonder if anyone knows anything? Thanks.

Hi Leodian. Looking at the Godfrey 1847 map of this area, the wording reads "Site of the Park Butts". This would match Butts Court, and would indicate a past firearms or archery range.

"Bulls" could be Butts, as in a target range for practicing shooting. That could be the reason behind Butts Court. If Leeds had a Militia or provided men for a Yeomanry of any sort, then there would be a Butts provided for them to practice.

Cheers jim and liits. Your suggestions sound very likely. Looking again at the 1850 map it could state 'Site of the Park Butts' (or 'Butt').
