Sorry to bring this in to SL,but i am looking for a copy of the BBC series "War Walks",by the late, and eminently great,Richard Holmes.Have scoured the internet and it is not available to buy, even on ebay.I was hoping that someone on here may have,or know of, a copy of this series,.Many thanks in anticipation.

Amazon do the book - which I had but was poor stuff - but don't think it ever came out to DVD. Have you had a look at BritMovie.com. I got some very old very odd stuff from there [Play for Today etc, stc], also stuff that never came to video / DVD.

Hi Liits. It did come out on DVD,BBC now has no availability on its site.Geordie exile-Seen the links to the Mons episodes on Youtube, which i have "ripped",but would love the series, especially the Somme episode.BTW,was in your neck of the woods for 3 hours this week. The Grainger Market is excellent, cant think why the Geordies come down in bus loads to Kirkgate market,Grainger is definiteley better.Shame aboot the miserable locals though

Hi Chris (long time no "speak"!),I'm not sure if it's some aspect of the TV episode you're interested in, in which case I can't help (I too have the War Walks book but not the video/DVD), but I have a full set of Battleground Europe books on the Somme (13 in total, published by Pen & Sword), which go into a lot of detail about different sites of the Battle of the Somme, e.g. Gommecourt, Beaumont Hamel, Mametz Wood, etc., which I used for several visits I've made to the area, so if there was anything in particular you needed to research, I might be able to help.

It is absolutely the model of what Leeds market could be [or at least a small area of Leeds Market].And an interesting link with Leeds Market is the fact it's the site of the smallest Marks & Spencer original penny bazaar in the world.

Wow Tasa,it has been a long time. Its mainly the area around Serre/Beaumont Hamel which is of interest, perhaps ill get the books as im sure they will be more in depth.Would have been nice to have the series though, something about Richard Holmes knowledge and delivery to camera that i find engaging, his book Tommy is fantastic,it can make you laugh one minute, and fill your eyes with tears the next.Shame he passed away

Wasnt referring to you ,you're a Loiner. The market really is great, like how ours was about 30 years ago.It is smaller, but for that you do get a better concentration of the stalls, and a better quality of stall. The book shop would never have been found in Leeds market,a great selection of quality books. The whole market was very impressive, perhaps Leeds should downsize all into the Edwardian part with a small quality extension, rather than that aircraft hanger.

Incidentally, Google Street View now covers the whole of the Somme area - it has been fascinating to "revisit" the places I saw!

Street view should be interesting.Spent a good while trying to overlay old trench maps onto a google earth image a couple of years ago.Was watching War Walks on youtube for Mons, very moving, especially the end with the dual link to the Somme campaign and Agincourt.Richard Holmes clearly had a grasp of his subject, and a grasp as to how to convey his knowledge to the layman such as myself.
