As a youngster aged 5 or 6 I was taken on a couple of the Burton's annual outings in the early to mid 50's . My mother and two aunts worked for Burtons Harehills factory. These outings were on a considerable scale, with a hundreds or possibly a few thousand people going on them. The trips I remember were 1. A day trip to London by special train ( or maybe there were 2 trains ). Lunch at Lyons corner house. The rest was free time to explore London . I got my first sight of the Thames, Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace and travelling on the Underground is all I can remember. There may have been other things laid on.2. By train to Liverpool. Some free time -I remember a trip on the Overhead Railway ( Dockers Umbrella) which gave a great view over the docks and liner terminals . Then boarding a chartered ferry (possibly Royal Iris) for a trip down the Mersey and across Liverpool bay to Llandudno. Lunch on board in 2 sittings I remember. Back to Leeds by train from Llandudno. My whole family, 6 or 7 of us went on this day out. Many of the things I remember have long gone - the Overhead railwayand the Cunard liners at Liverpool. , steamers landing at Llandudno pier. I have a clear memory of the large number of sunken and wrecked ships with superstructure visible as we left the Mersey. My mother thought it might have been a result of the war. Does anyone else remember going on Burtons trips in the 50's , or have any information about them? I would like to pin down the dates of the Liverpool and London trips ( they were between 1952 & 1956) .
It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!
